Homeland Defense

"Homeland Defense" is a term used by defense agencies that refers to government initiatives to mobilize military, intelligence, and defense forces to institute domestic law and order in a state of emergency and as a response to various threats. Yentl. Barbra Streisand made her directorial debut with this 1983 adaptation of the Isaac Bashevis Singer story about a young Eastern European woman (Streisand) who disguises herself as a male at the turn of the 20th century in order to get an education. [click here]

It should be noted that some members of the Chassidic Jewish community have found this film offensive because short segments portray somewhat negative stereotypes which do not represent the overall character of the Chassidic Jewish community.

This rousing musical, based on the stories of Sholem Aleichem, takes place in pre-revolutionary Russia and centers on the life of Tevye (Topol), a milkman who is trying to keep his family's traditions in place while marrying off his three older daughters. When the Nazi party confiscates a housewares plant from Jewish businessmen, Oskar Schindler agrees to take it over. Staggering adaptation of Thomas Keneally's best-seller about the real-life Catholic war profiteer who initially flourished by sucking up to the Nazis, but eventually saved the lives of more than 1,000 Polish Jews by employing them in his factory, manufacturing crockery for the German army. Jewish friends Hersh Rasseyner and Chaim Kovler grew up together in Poland but their friendship dissolved after Chaim lost interest in religion and became a writer.
