In 1984, a national consortium of housing organizations was helping provide housing and development support across Colombia. The consortium was named Fedevivienda.
In summary, a group of people (family, friends, neighbors) could form a local housing association which would begin as a cooperative building project to create the housing on land they would collectively own. Once established, the homes built by the owners, would become a long-term investment and residence for the group.
In 1984, Hamline University offered a South American Urban Studies (SAUS) program of study abroad focusing mostly on Colombia. The SAUS program was part of the Higher Education Consortium for Urban Affairs (HECUA) of which Hamline was a member.
