Welcome
I hope you’re doing well. Thanks for taking time to read the latest seasonal newsletter.
Winter 2022
In March 2021, I switched to a having seasonal updates (quarterly) rather than monthly. That slower pace tends to work better than feeling pressured to create content and updates monthly. It also helps retain people’s attention better than a dozen emails and hundreds of posts.
We’re now heading into the winter (Dec-Feb) season. These cold shorter days are a good opportunity to get cozy with a good book. The weather of the season drives us inward — we’re inside more — and also is a time to reflect on the past year as well as plan for the year ahead.
Fall 2022 Content
There were 38 new posts to the Resources For Life dot com website for the fall 2022 season (Aug-Sep-Nov). A variety of topics are covered including world news, healthcare, religion, politics, and environmental issues. Some interesting music videos are also featured. I’ll share some of that below. To view all of the fall posts and articles, visit the What’s New page. [View]
Tech Articles
My tech writings, buying guides, and support documents for the fall 2022 season are on the Iowa City Tech website featured on the posts page. [View]
Singing Circle
The video below is from one of the music-related posts for fall 2022. The singer Michal Elia Kamal of the band “Light in Babylon” from Istanbul, Turkey was a guest of a singing circle in Tel Aviv called “Unite in Babylon” performing the Hebrew song “Hinech Yafa” (25 Apr 2018)
Website Evolution
In the first 15-20 years of the Resources For Life dot com website, the site served many purposes, but I didn’t have a place to share my own personal news. I would sometimes use the monthly newsletter for that purpose, and a few posts, but the personal posts seemed out of place on what is mostly a reference website.
In 2014, I launched the About Greg Johnson dot com website to share my personal life stories. [View Launch Post] Each month I create a post with a summary of what happened that month. [View Site] I like writing, and hadn’t done much story telling in the first person. It’s a different kind of writing style than a technical or reference article.
In 2013, I launched Iowa City Technology Services dot com to focus on my tech-related writings and consulting work. [View Launch Post] Then in 2020, wanting a shorter simpler name, I created the Iowa City Tech dot com website which has evolved into an organized focused and minimalist tech resource. [View Launch Post]
I’ve created many other sites to focus on other topics. There’s no clear advantage of one approach over another. The Resources For Life website has the advantage of bringing in millions of readers from all over the world. It contains many articles on quirky topics. Of the millions of visitors, some explore the site and discover more content of interest. Having commonly shared unified pages on the site is helpful, such as the contact page, about page, etc. Because the site has had many readers it ranks well.
Yet, I find that people specifically seeking tech articles (for example) might not also want to read about politics, religion, philosophy, or tiny houses. It creates clutter and dilutes the tech information. For some information, having a topic-focused site better serves the reader.
Resources For Life continues to be a reference website on various topics, with posts that are mostly written in in third-person. It’s a different style of writing than my story telling and personal observations.
When I’m planning to write, I first decide what site (and what audience) the writing is for. If it’s tech related, it goes on the Iowa City Tech website. If it’s personal, it goes on my personal site. All other writings go mostly on the Resources For Life website.
