RFL News 2024 Q1

Welcome

I hope you’re doing well. Thanks for taking time to read this quarterly newsletter of Resources For Life. In an effort to get back on schedule, this update comes two days after the 2023 Q4 email was sent out.

The sunrise photo at the top of this page was taken during my morning walk on 20 Dec 2023 at Finkbine Golf Course.

Starting the New Year

As I begin each year, I take a few weeks or a few months to consider what news topics are likely to evolve over the year ahead. I look for topics that influence personal planning, business decisions, and changes in the sociocultural landscape.

Being mostly focused on my tech consulting work, I have less time for daily or weekly stories that will be of little interest or relevance later in the year. Instead I consider topics with evolving developments likely to be impactful going forward. This is why there is typically a lull at the beginning of the year in the reports getting posted to the Resources For Life website.

Writing Style

In the initial 20 years of its existence, the Resources For Life website contained a variety of writing styles and content topics.

Starting in 2020, I’ve created a more refined and defined method for curating the site materials. In part, this is determined by what writing style best fits a topic.

The writing style I use on the Resources For Life website is mostly third person, similar to a reference guide or Wikipedia.

My personal stories or opinion articles are on my personal website, AboutGregJohnson.com — for content with some connection to my own experiences.

Technical guides are found on my Iowa City Tech dot com website which is designed to be a reference guide and training resource for the hundreds of people I regularly support. Having answers and user guides available online helps reduce the amount of billable time people need to pay me for.

So, these are the three main categories of writing that I am working on: (1) General topics, (2) Personal views and stories, (3) Technical advice and user guides.
